The internship is designed to provide 3 highly motivated individuals with in-depth training in lameness, internal medicine and reproduction, while offering additional experience in ambulatory medicine, sport horse medicine and pleasure horse practice. Mentoring is provided by ten full time veterinarians, including a board certified internal medicine specialist, as well as two on-call board certified surgeons. Emphasis is placed on developing diagnostic skills using physical examination and clinical laboratory testing while becoming proficient in the use of ancillary diagnostics, such as digital radiography and ultrasonography. The interns assume increasing case management, client communication and solo ambulatory responsibilities during the year. The internship at B.W. Furlong & Associates provides a well-rounded experience for individuals interested in pursuing a career in private practice or a residency in internal medicine, ophthalmology or diagnostic imaging.

Interns rotate between hospital, ambulatory, and diagnostic imaging services. The interns spend a significant amount of time working on lameness cases with Dr. Furlong and internal medicine cases with Dr. Gardner. Time is also spent evaluating horses requiring advanced imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, MRI and nuclear scintigraphy. The intern then participates in performing and interpreting the studies. Remaining time is spent with ambulatory clinicians and doing solo ambulatory calls. Interns participate in the after-hours emergency coverage schedule.

Candidates interested in pursuing an internship at B.W. Furlong & Associates are strongly encouraged to visit the practice on an externship. Application requirements consist of graduation from veterinary school, a passing score on NAVLE or NBE and CCT and prerequisites necessary to obtain New Jersey licensure. Applications should include a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, transcript, three letters of recommendation, and current photograph.
