Spotlight Series: Dr. Courtney Wittich

Over the first 18 weeks of the new year, we will be conducting one on one interviews with each of our veterinarians in an effort to help you get to know all of them better! In addition to the interview, they will be posting pictures on our facebook account during their week to share some behind the scenes images of their day to day. We hope you enjoy following along!

First up is Courtney Wittich, DVM. Dr. Wittich is currently in Wellington, FL for the season, where she has been since the end of October. She spends the remainder of the year following the show circuit, making stops in Tryon and Saugerties.

Q: If you weren’t a vet, what would you do for a living?
A: Nature photographer. I love art, photography, animals, and travel so to be paid to travel the world capturing animals in their natural habitat would pretty cool.

Q: What’s a good book you’ve recently read and enjoyed?
A: The Lost City of the Monkey God – Its a nonfiction book about the search for an ancient lost city in Honduras. It discusses new technological advances in archaeology and the indigenous people that ruled the area around the same time as the Mayans. I love history and adventure stories so this was right up my alley like a modern day Indiana Jones story.

Q: Favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?
A: Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The scuba diving and architecture of the buildings were amazing. Any time I’m near the water I’m generally a happy person.

Q: Dream vacation?
A: Getting to visit the research station on the Farallon Islands off the coast of California. The islands are one of the main stopping points along the migratory routes for White Sharks and it would be incredible to see such an isolated, unspoiled spot of nature.

Q: Favorite adult beverage?
A: Any kind of Bourbon. Having lived in Kentucky for three years and doing the Bourbon run you can’t help but join the bandwagon.

Q: Favorite sports team?
A: Minnesota Twins. I grew up in Minnesota in a sports obsessed family so I never really had a choice but to become a Twinkie. When I was younger, my dad took my sister and I to every home game, and when we moved to Ohio we went to every game where the Indians played the Twins.

Q: Something most people don’t know about me…
A: I love painting. When I was on the road over the summer this year I packed my easel and paints and would send all of my finished pieces home to my parents so I wasn’t driving around with a bunch of paintings stacked around my vet box.

Q: I am obsessed with…
A: Mixed martial arts and the UFC. When I was in grad school I started taking Krav Maga self defense classes and ended up becoming an instructor. Several of the other instructors practiced MMA and convinced me take it up as well. I’ve broken my hand, a toe, and a tooth training but it’s still one of my favorite ways to let off steam. I love watching it too and am often at Buffalo Wild Wings when a big fight is on.
