Spotlight Series: Dr. Ellen Levitian

Over the first 18 weeks of the new year, we will be conducting one on one interviews with each of our veterinarians in an effort to help you get to know all of them better! In addition to the interview, they will be posting pictures on our facebook account during their week to share some behind the scenes images of their day to day. We hope you enjoy following along!

Up this week is Ellen Levitian, DVM. Dr. Levitian interests include emergency medicine, gastroenterology, neonatology, and ophthalmology. She is recently engaged and has been enjoying planning her 2019 wedding!

Q: Tell me about your first meaningful memory with an animal.
A: Back in Russia there was a neighborhood goat that I used to play with that would always chase me and head butt me! I loved playing with him anyways.

Q: What colleges/universities did you attend? When someone asks “where did you go to school?” what do you tell them?
A: I did my undergraduate studies at Rutgers University “Cook College” where I received my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science/Pre-vet and a minor in Equine Science. My vet school experience took place on the magical island of St. Kitts with my 4th year spent at North Carolina State.

Q: Tell me about the animals you own now.
A: Currently I have a Quarter Horse mare named Franzia aka “Franny”, a black lab named “Bear” and a cat named “Morgan Mufasa”.

Q: What do you do for fun, outside of work and spend time with your animals?
A: Wedding planning has taken over a lot of free time. I am so excited to plan with my fiance, Robert Kilborne, as we start this new chapter of our lives together.

Q: If you weren’t a vet, what would you do for a living?
A: I have literally no idea. I have wanted to be a vet since I was a child and have never thought of any other options!

Q: Favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?
A: Anything with a nice beach 🙂 Cayman Islands and Bahamas probably make top of the list!

Q: Dream vacation?
A: I would love to travel and explore Europe since I have never been!

Q: Favorite food?
A: Sushi and seafood

Q: Favorite adult beverage?
A: Vodka, although thanks to my fiance, Robert Kilborne, I enjoy trying different craft beers.

Q: What are you currently watching on Netflix?
A: Alias Grace and Riverdale.

Q: Something most people don’t know about me…
A: I was born in Russia and moved to the USA with my immediate family when I was 5 years old. I knew absolutely no English so it was a difficult journey for a while until I got the hang of it.

Q: If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it — metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions — what would it say and why?
A: Live like you were dying.

Q: What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
A: I love reading Vampire books and watching vampire shows and movies. Don’t judge haha.

Q: What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?
A: Anything and everything that starts with “Well I read on the internet…”
