B.W. Furlong & Associates is an equine veterinary practice headquartered in Oldwick, NJ. The practice employs 15 veterinarians that practice in the Northeast, as well as 3 that practice in Florida and Virginia under the name Peak Performance Equine Services. The businesses staff between 20-30 employees that work in roles to support the veterinarians. It is an extremely fast-paced and busy practice, serving and caring for some of the most prestigious clientele in the country. The main practice consists of a full service ambulatory division, as well as a 4 acre facility that houses a full service 12 stall hospital, isolation barn, lab, and advanced imaging capabilities. It also has separate properties that include a standing MRI and a rehabilitation center. Employees of the company are all expected to demonstrate the core beliefs.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: The Human Resources & Administrative Manager is responsible for overall human resources strategy & risk management strategy and implementation of structure, processes and practices necessary to continually elevate talent and minimized exposed risk. He/she directs and structures the human resource functions to support the company’s culture, while complying with municipal, state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities
Human Resources

  • Engage extensively in hiring & onboarding process, including understanding growth strategy, creating job descriptions that are accurate in responsibilities, qualifications, and compensation, recruiting and identifying quality candidates, and negotiating job offers
  • Process payroll on bi-weekly basis, including generating additional compensation reports and interpreting the data
  • Help all employees grow and develop by leading the employee review process, which includes soliciting feedback from peers, interpreting the feedback and identifying themes, and then developing SMART goals to encourage, monitor, and drive personal growth
  • Review and monitor employment contracts to ensure compliance and consistency in updates
  • Monitor benefits enrollment and status while also evaluating alternative options to improve total compensation value for employees
  • Ensure compliance by the company with respect to all local and federal employment regulations, update handbook to reflect compliance as well as company preferences, and effectively communicate changes and expectations to all employees
  • Ensure security of all private data files while also maintaining accurate records
  • File annual reports and audits in compliance with human resource law
  • Provide guidance and support to team leaders in conflict resolution and/or lead discussions with employees when necessary to adjust actions or behavior
  • Any and all additional actions and steps consistent with maintaining a dynamic workforce

Administrative

  • Take ownership of all insurance policies, including negotiations, implementation, upkeep and management
  • Ensure ongoing compliance and understanding of all policies across all practices and locations
  • Stay up to date on and enforce accident and safety compliance protocols and policies, including familiarity with veterinary medical protocols
  • Identify high risk areas and be capable of managing it within a compliance discipline
  • Any and all additional actions and steps consistent with mitigating risk

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Business Administration, Human Resources or related field required
  • 7-10 years experience in Human Resources with demonstrated leadership abilities, preferably in a veterinary/medicine setting
  • In-depth knowledge of labor and employment laws pertaining to all aspects of Human Resources Administration
  • Requires an exceptional level of interpersonal skills, sensitivity, tact and diplomacy
  • Experience working with employees at multiple sites
  • Confident working in fast-paced environment while maintaining high levels quality control
  • Ability to connect the people strategy with the business strategy
  • Experience with Benefits Administration
  • Integrates divergent points of view from multiple stakeholders to arrive at best solution for the business
  • Track record of identifying opportunities for HR to deliver value-added services and programs to enhance business results
